“The transformation took a couple of hours, the gray hair was dyed dark brown, a new hair cut was applied and Madiha looked in the mirror to find her mother’s face dominating the glass. Madiha didn’t know what to think of her new look, a different hair color, a new cut and a face masked with full make up that suffocated her skin and made her feel like a plastic toy.”

“In her office, she rocked in her leather chair. She opened her second drawer, the one with the lock, and got out the white envelope. Mony’s large letters were neatly crafted on it: “A message to Mummy, please read it as soon as possible.” The words ‘as soon as possible’ were underlined and written in capital letters. Madiha stared at the rectangular shape she was holding. Yes she didn’t have the courage to open it the same day Mony stuffed it in her bag. Yet she didn’t mean to ignore it for three months. She thought of it daily, got it out of the drawer many times. Everyday she decided to wait for tomorrow and every tomorrow brought another tomorrow till Mony shocked her today with the fact that it had been ninety days. Ninety days of tomorrows. Today Madiha wasn’t ready for any tomorrows.  Not that she wanted to read the letter or that she had a clear mind for reading it. She was only curious of….”

“Hanan, Hanan, come quickly.”
“I’m waiting for the donkey, Mohamed said he will let me ride it after Ahmed.”

“Come here now! Come! Your father wants you.”

“But I want to ride the donkey.”

“Why didn’t you ride it before? It’s almost Zuhr and you went to ride it long time ago. Now come or you father will massacre you.”

“My brothers said my turn would be the last.” Hanan dried her tears with her long sleeve as she started walking inside.

“The three of them spent their Saturday hours celebrating. They got ice cream and milkshake and surpassing the gates of the club and roaming the streets of Zamalek they bought a dozen books for Mony, one for Madiha and finally Fouad decided on a palette, paints and brushes. Before going home Madiha captured the moment in which her children’s eyes shone with joy for maybe the first time in their life.”

#FabulousVeils Novel#CreativityChallenge#Passage 5

“Maman, I’m here,” Mony shouted, holding a crystal glass of pineapple juice, standing in the middle of the party, dressed in a pair of black leather skinny trousers, a black chiffon long-sleeved top, her hear braided in dozens of thin braids and her face unmade up except for a pink lipstick. Staring at her daughter, Madiha pressed her jaws firmly and packed her anger in her stomach, storing it for later.”

#FabulousVeils Novel#CreativityChallenge#Passage 4

The next two days made Fatma appreciate her life back in the city and she longed to go back to work. She missed the morning cup of Nescafé she would drink in the Madame’s house in Maadi. The Madame always left early and came back after Fatma’s departure. This was her favorite day of the week. Starting with a cup of coffee in the Madame’s mug, trying to sit on the high chair and falling, laughing at her fat body and short legs. This Madame was generous, always insisting that Fatma eat whatever she wanted from the fridge before working. She didn’t merely leave her an egg and beans like the other houses. Fatma’s mouth watered remembering the round baked thing she tasted once, that was coated with chocolate and filled with yellow custard. She couldn’t remember how the Madame called it.

Passage #1:

“It was the call for al-Fajr prayer that put an end to Gameela’s tender caress with the weapon she had been holding. She made herself comfortable on her thick mattress, returned the pistol again to its residence and concealed herself well with the old colorless bed cover she had owned for a long time.”
